Foundation

Organization & History

The Algona Family YMCA Foundation is a private non-profit corporation funded by individual gifts for the purpose of assisting in sustaining the operations of the Algona Family YMCA. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and all donations to the Foundation are tax deductible.

The initial contribution was in 1989 when Ernie and Glady Williams donated $100,000. Since that time a Heritage Club was developed and most recently a gift of $2.9 million was left to the YMCA by Milton Burlingame, an Algona, Iowa resident who passed away in March of 2006.

The gift from Ernie and Glady Williams was made with the provisions of providing swim lessons to 2nd grade children in Algona. The Heritage Club was formed to help grow the endowment. There were 25 original members of the club who have either made financial contributions or have included the YMCA in their will or both. The gift by Milt Burlingame was an unrestricted gift. The Algona Family YMCA Board of Directors voted to put these funds in a separate foundation to help support the YMCA operations for perpetuity. Thus, the Algona Family YMCA Foundation was created on March 22, 2007.
