Aqua Babies & Shrimps - Ages 6 months to 4 years

Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides them to learn aquatic skills.  The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control.  Activities are based on the developemental abilities of the child.

YMCA Preschool Lessons  -Age 3 to 5 years

Pike

Pike - Child learns how to enter and exit the pool safely. Child learns how to front/back float for 20 seconds with a float belt. Child learns how to paddle 10 yards on their front/back/side with a float belt, 5 feet without.

Eel

Eel - Child learns to jump in the pool and return to the wall without any assistance. Child learns to front/back float for 20 seconds with/without a float belt. Child learns how to paddle 25 yards on their front/back/side with a float belt, 15 feet without.

Ray

Ray - Child learns to bob and take a breath 10 times in shallow water without a float belt. Child learns to tread water for 20 - 30 seconds without a float belt. Child learns to front/back float for 30 seconds without a float belt. Child learns how to do the front alternating paddle/front symmetrical paddle/side alternating paddle/back alternating paddle/back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards with a float belt, 20 feet without. Child learns to jump into deep water and swim up.

Starfish

Starfish - Child learns how to bob and take a breath 10 times in deep water without a float belt. Child learns to tread water for 20 - 30 seconds without a float belt. Child learns to front/back float for 1 minute without a float belt. Child learns how to do the front alternating paddle/front symmetrical paddle/side alternating paddle/back alternating paddle/back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards with a float belt, 40 feet without. Child learns how to do a front and back somersault without assistance. Child learns how to do a kneeling dive with assistance and paddle 15 feet.

YMCA Progressive Lessons - Ages 6 and up

Polliwog

Polliwog - Child learns to jump in the pool and return to the wall without any assistance. Child learns to front/back float for 30 seconds without a float belt. Child learns how to paddle on their front/back/side 25 yards with a float belt, 20 feet without.

Guppies

Guppy - Child learns to bob and take a breath 10 times without a float belt. Child learns to tread water for 20 - 30 seconds with/without a float belt. Child learns to front/back float for 1 minute without a float belt. Child learns how to do the front alternating paddle/front symmetrical paddle/side alternating paddle/back alternating paddle/back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards with/without a float belt. Child learns how to do a front/back somersault with assistance. Child learns how to do a kneeling dive with assistance and paddle 15 feet.

Minnow

Minnow - Child learns to do the restring stroke for 3 minutes. Child learns to tread water for 1 minute. Child learns how to do the front alternating paddle with rudimentary overarm stroke and rotary breathing/front rudimentary breastroke/rudimentary sidestroke/back alternating overarm stroke/back symmetrical rudimentary elementary backstroke for 25 yards without a float belt. Child learns how to do a standing dive off the pool deck.

Fish

Fish - Child learns to tread deep water for 3 minutes with a combination of kicks. Child learns to float for 6 minutes without a float belt. Child learns how to do the crawl stroke with roatary breathing/breaststroke/elementary backstroke/back crawl/sidestroke for 50 yards without a float belt. Child learns how to do the butterfly for 25 yards with fins, 15 yards without. child learns how to do a standing/pike/tuck dive off the diving board.

Flying Fish

Flying Fish - Child learns how to tread deep water for 6 minutes with a combination of kicks. Child learns how to float for 6 minutes with clothes on. Child learns how to do the crawl stroke with bilateral breathing/breaststroke/elementary backstroke/back crawl/sidestroke for 100 yards with open turns. Child learns how to do the butterfly for 25 yards with fins, 15 yards without. Child learns how to do the flip turn for the front crawl and back crawl. Child learns how to do the trunover turn for back crawl. Child learns how to use a snorkel and clear mask and snorkel.

Shark

Shark - Child learns how to do the crawl stroke for 100 yards with front flip turns. Child learns how to do the breaststroke for 100 yards with pull-out. Child learns how to do the inverted breaststroke for 50 yards. Child learns how to do the back crawl for 100 yards with the dolphin kick, streamlining. Child learns how to do the overarm sidestroke for 50 yards. Child learns how to do the butterfly stroke for 25 yards. Child learns how to do the trudgen crawl for 50 yards. Child learns how to swim an individual medley for 200 yards.

Porpoise

 Porpoise - Child learns to tread water for 2 minutes while holding a diving brick. Child learns how to disrobe/inflate clothes in water. Child learns how to swim 200 yards individual medley. Child learns how to double trudgen crawl for 50 yards. Child learns to swim 15 yards carrying a 10lb. diving brick. Child learns how to approach crawl stroke for 25 yards. Child learns how to do the stride entry and approach crawl to retrieve an object.

Adult Lessons

Beginner -This class is for adults who do not feel at ease in the water or who have never participated in swimming lessons.  Non-swimmers are taught basic swimming skills and water saftey.

Intermediate/Advanced - This class is for adults who are comfortable in the water and would like to work on refining their strokes and increasing endurance.
